캐나다로 석사 유학을 가기로 결심했다면 가장 먼저 결정해야 할 것은 '지역'이다. 어떤 주로 가고 싶은지를 먼저 결정한 후에 '어느 대학'을 갈 것이냐를 나중에 결정해야 한다. 물론 지역 가리지 않고 전부 다 지원한 후에 합격한 곳들 중 골라 갈 수도 있겠지만, 주에 따라 생활비와 주변환경이 천차만별이기에 먼저 지역을 결정하기로 했다.
여러 번의 유학박람회 경험 결과 온타리오 주가 생활에 필요한 정보가 가장 많고, 갈 수 있는 대학 후보도 가장 많다고 생각해, 크게 온타리오 주와 그 외 지역으로 구분해 보기로 했다. 희망사항은 온주에 가는 것이지만 그게 맘대로 되는 것도 아니니까 일단 사전조사는 많을수록 좋다고 생각했다. 갈 수 있는 대학 후보는 내가 원하는 과(Civil or Environmental Engineering)의 존재 여부 & 2020 캐나다 대학 순위표 (이전글 참조)를 참고했다.
대학교 정보 조사 시 따져본 요건은 크게 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프로그램 개요 (MSc, Meng 구분 등), 둘째, 입학조건(학부 GPA 및 영어성적), 셋째, 학비. 이 세 가지 조건에 전부 들어맞아야만 지원이 가능하다.
1. 프로그램 개요
보통 대부분의 대학들이 MSc, MEng 프로그램을 별도로 운영하고 있다. 대학에 따라 둘 중 하나만 운영하는 경우도 있지만 소수에 불과하다. 이에 후보 대학들의 각 프로그램 운영 여부와 그 기간을 조사했다.
가장 중요한 정보중의 하나는 프로그램 기간이다. PGWP를 3년 받기 위해서는 최소 2년간의 수학기간이 보장되어야 한다. 몇몇 프로그램의 경우 2년 이하, 심지어는 9개월안에 프로그램을 마치라고 하는 경우도 있었다. 따라서 2년의 학생신분이 보장되지 않는 대학교는 후보에서 제외했다. 모든 정보는 2021년 12월 기준이다.

2. 입학 조건
GRE 필요 여부, Grade, 영어 점수(Ielts), 학습계획서(SOP), 추천서 등을 위주로 조사했다. 대부분의 학교에서는 GRE는 필요하지 않거나 또는 요구사항 자체에 없었다. 성적은 B+정도를 평균적으로 요구하는 듯 했고, 영어는 대부분 6.5 정도를 요구한다. Overall 이외에도 Each조건을 내건 학교가 많으므로 자세히 체크해야 한다. 물론 아카데믹 점수다.
CV나 추천서 준비 요령은 내용이 많으므로 따로 자리를 내어 정리할 예정이다. 해당학교 담당교수의 경우, MSc는 거의 무조건 필요하고, Meng의 경우 필요 없다고 생각하면 대부분 들어맞는다. 표로 정리해 보면 다음과 같다. 마찬가지로 2021 년 12월 기준이므로 현재는 바뀌었을 수도 있다.

학비의 경우 MSc 와 MEng가 현격한 차이가 있다. MSc의 경우 보통 우리 나라의 공대 대학원생에 해당하므로 대부분의 학비를 지원받는다. 학교에 따라서 +로 생활비까지 지원이 되는 곳도 있다. 대신 담당교수의 연구를 도우며 본인의 연구를 진행해 논문을 써야 한다.
MEng는 간단히 수업만 듣고 졸업이 가능하므로 학업에 대한 부담이 덜하지만, 학비를 자부담해야 된다는 단점이 있다. 게다가 캐나다 대학의 경우 학비가 그야말로 천차만별이기 때문에 학교별 제대로 조사가 필요하다. 내가 조사한 대학 중 가장 비싼 대학교는 토론토 대학으로 최종 학비가 6만불이 넘었고, 가장 싼 학교는 Victoria 대학으로 학기당 3700불 가량이므로 4학기 기준 약 15,000 불이므로 토론토 대학 대비 약 1/4이라고 볼 수 있었다. 아래는 2021년 12월 기준 학비 조사표이다. 위 세 가지 조건을 종합적으로 판단하여, MSc 와 MEng 각 Stream 에 대해 별도의 전략을 갖고 지원하기로 했다. MSc는 학비 부담이 없으므로 각 학교별로 괜찮아 교이는 교수의 Bio를 참고해 무작정 interest letter를 날리고 그 결과를 보기로 했다. MEng는 교수 컨택이 전부 실패했을 경우를 대비해 학비 부담이 덜한 4~5곳의 대학을 추려서 지원서를 넣기로 했다. 여러가지 조건을 따진 결과 MEng는 온주에서 2곳(Carleton, Ottawa), 그 외 지역에서 2곳(Calgary, Regina) 을 선택했다.
